In 1999, Maya began studying Middle Eastern Dance (belly dance). As she explored this sacred and ancient dance, she began to personally understand its capacity to heal the emotional, spiritual, and physical bodies of women. In 2003, she founded The Maya Zahira School of Belly Dance, an organization that promotes healing for women through the art of belly dance.
In addition, Maya also practices ecstatic/trance dance, with emphasis on the teachings of Gabrielle Roth, as taught by Laura Martin-Eagle.
In 1999, Maya began studying Middle Eastern rhythms as they apply to belly dance. She quickly discovered the healing capacity of drumming and began exploring drum techniques from many traditions. Maya began her training in Helmtone drum therapy in 2007 under the instruction of master drummer and healer, Russell “Buddy” Helm.
Maya believes that she and her clients and students are partners in healing. She works to support and empower each person as they find their own innate ability to heal themselves.
